Remembering games of yesteryear

  As I mentioned previously, board games are a great way to spend an evening with family or friends. These could include corntoss boards, quoit boards, but there is one that few people know about and is a bit more recent. It’s called ‘Farkle,’ also known as ‘Alakshak.’ I did some research as to how this game started, and it is quite interesting. There were men who were workers up in (where else) Alaska, that got bored with nothing to do on the bitter cold evenings there. So, they needed something as a distraction, something that would break up the boredom and their wanting to climb the walls of their cabin, so they came up with this board game. It is played with 6 dice and kind of similar to Yahtzee, as points are scored for a person’s roll of the dice. The elderly couple that taught us this game several years ago were quite good at this because ‘practice made perfect’ in this case. They played it so often and had so many favorite expressions when one or the other would take an unnecessary risk to get still more points. We remember the husband would call out ‘chicken!’ to either his wife or us, and then proceed to make the clucking sound along with pretending to flap his wings at us, if we chose not to ‘blow it’ and roll the dice for yet more points. But what if someone tried to get more points and then his roll of the dice failed him? That will be considered next.

Although they are on nearly completely different sides of the world, well at least different sides of the hemisphere the two countries share a lot of the same geographical markers. For example when Canadians travel to New Zealand they are surprised to see how much the landscape looks familiar.

For example did you know that the besides the Remarkables mountain range in Queenstown in the South island the only other mountain range in the world that runs North South are the Rockies in Canada. Actually that may not be an entirely true fact as the Andes in South America also appear to run vertically. Perhaps that is a fact that needs verification.

It’s Been One Year
