Why Use Aquarium Powerheads

September 1st, 2010 by admin

Aquarium powerheads are  important  when you have a large tank, especially if you are keeping saltwater  fish in large reef tanks. Aquarium powerheads are electrical units  with motors that can be submerged  and produce  water currents in your tank that mimic the water currents in natural bodies of water.   The water movement  generated also  helps in the filtration of water. Water currents generated by the powerheads prevent sediment from settling in the bottom and  instead keep them floating where they can easily be directed towards the filters for filtration. The circulation also distributes heat all throughout the water, keeping the water temperature even. The current also gives fish something to swim against.

Powerheads can produce uni and multi-directional water  flows depending on  the design you have. If you  have  two or more powerheads it is better to position the two  on each sides of the tank  to create competing currents and use oscillating powerheads plugged into a wavemaker for stronger currents.
